American Pools Resurfacing'S 8-STEP POOL RESURFACING PROCESS

In applying reinforced composite, finishes can vary depending on the different methods used. For us the key ingredient to quality work is still the same - Attention To Detail. Whether it be a commercial facility or a residential back yard. Our attention to detail is unsurpassed.

The Details:

  • Step 1. Surface Preparation & Seal Lines
  • Step 2. Pre coat with LINER LOCK®
  • Step 3. A layer of AMERICOAT 1®
  • Step 4. A sheet of Owen CORNING™ Fiberglass Chopped Strand Mat®
  • Step 5. Another layer of AMERICOAT 1®
  • Step 6-7-8. Three individual coats of our AMERICOAT 2® top coat

Let's talk about Prep Work

Don't be fooled!

Preparing a pool for resurfacing is NOT a cut-and-dried process. Besides making sure the pool is clean - several preliminary decisions need to be made. The first few steps are by far some of the most important. The presence of ground water requires the pool to be secured against hydraulic pressure. The first thing we do is open the hydrostatic relief valve (not all pools are so equipped). In these instances we drill a hole in the pool floor. A pipe with a 2" coupling fitted to receive a 2" line or plug will be hydraulically cemented in place allowing the water to flow freely into the pool. A discharge pump may need to be hard piped to this fitting in the floor to provide additional removal of ground water.

Broken and cracked substrate will need special attention. All cracks are packed with fast drying hydraulic cement or our own premium putty mix - Seal Line Lock 77®. This is a high strength water immersable chemical resistant putty. Our Seal Line Lock 77® putty is a four component mix formulated using our premium fiber coat, pure vinyl ester resin micro talc, our secret ingredient and activator. We know the importance of proper material use at the seal lines, and because of this we do not use silicone.

Mixing our putty by hand as needed allows us to adjust our ingredients to facilitate the different application thicknesses.

The sealing properties of Seal Line Lock 77® are worth the added time and expense. When cured, it provides you with a hard non-penetrable seal that is then covered with 3 coats of our Premium Gel Coat. This four step process assures us of no failures at the seal lines. Some companies cut corners and expense by applying a bead of silicone or some other under water sealant. This method does not hold up very long. It can collect algae, turn green, or fail all together. Once an area has come loose the rest will soon follow, compromising the entire liner.

Seal lines are important!

There are a variety of seal lines currently being used in the industry today. American Pools Resurfacing's process, the "Cut-back V", is proven to stop water leakage at the seal line and has even been copied by many companies since its inception two decades ago. American Pools Resurfacing can't stress how important these seal lines are and the materials used to seal them. Our Seal Line Lock 77® is a specially designed putty for seal lines.

American Pools Resurfacing pre-coat is designed to lock onto your existing surface and create an excellent bond for the fiberglass. American Pools Resurfacing is one of the few pool resurfacing companies that uses a pure, specially formulated pre-coat. It costs a little more, but without it many pools develop blisters and air pockets on the pool surface.

Why all our fiberglass applications are done by hand
Hand laminations take more time and man power, but out in the field this is by far the best approach. Always innovative American Pools Resurfacing has done extensive research into the chopper gun lamination process. We determined that under ideal conditions, in an enclosed temperature controlled factory setting, spray applied fiberglass is terrific. However in the field we adamantly oppose this technology. External mixing guns (chopper guns) shoot the material through a nozzle where they mix at the tips. Humidity, wind variations, and other elements affect the way the materials mix. You can end up with hot or cold spots from improper catalyzation.
Hand-laid fiberglass mat is sturdier and gives more consistent thickness because the catalysts can be more thoroughly mixed with the resin using this method. Catalyzation is more effective, preventing hard, brittle, or soft spots from forming.

Resin and Fiberglass Matting

All our unique fiberglass applications are done by hand.
Our unique fiberglass process begins by saturating the surface with a layer of our Liner Lock® (pre-coat). This saturation maximizes the bonding properties of the surface.
After proper drying, but before proceeding to our fiber glass application, the entire surface (100%) goes through a rigid inspection. We then apply AMERICOAT 1®, our virgin vinyl ester resin, immediately followed by a sheet of Owen Corning™ Fiberglass Chopped Strand Mat. A second layer of virgin vinyl ester is then applied on top of the Owen Corning™ Fiberglass Chopped Strand Mat encapsulating the fiberglass mat between two layers of pure specially designed virgin vinyl ester resin.

The entire surface is then rib-rolled with three and five-inch hand tools. Our rib-rolling process cuts through the fiberglass, allowing the two layers of resin to meet. This removes all air pockets leaving you with a smooth, hand-rolled fiberglass liner. Once the fiberglass surface is dry, using a variety of grinders and abrasives, we grind the entire surface, thus preparing it for our premium gel coat. Seal lines are finished at this point with our specially formulated Seal Line Lock 77® putty.

Every step of every process is important. But the final coat, the Gel Coat, is the most important. We build up this most important coat with three applications of ourAMERICOAT 2®, grinding the surface between each coat. This ensures a smooth, non-porous, chemical impervious surface that will not crack or blister, and will resist algae and staining.

The Benefits

Reduced Maintenance
A Fiberglass surface is strong, durable, and non-porous. Fiberglass resists discoloration, and so reduces the need for sandblasting and acid-washing. Our hand-applied gel coat finish is smooth, uniform, non-abrasive and watertight, and can turn an eyesore into an improvement.

HazMat Applications
A Fiberglass surface is corrosion-resistant and impermeable. It will withstand pH ranges from 0-13. A special blend of resins ensures bonding to almost any existing surface.

Durability
This process is much stronger than conventional surfaces, and can last from 25 to 30 years. There are several things to consider when installing a fiberglass liner, and among the most important are the experience of the installer and the quality of the liner. American Pools Resurfacing has done hundreds of fiberglass liners, both residential and commercial, over the past two decades.

Versatility
The 8-Step coating process can be used in pools, tanks and facilities of all shapes and sizes.

Reduced Chemical Use
The stain-resistant properties of a Fiberglass surface can reduce chemical use by up to 30-50%, mainly due to reduced water loss. Fiberglass resists algae, and causes no chemical reactions, so chemical balance is easier to maintain. Reduced water loss also makes it easier to maintain pool temperature, reducing your heating costs.
