All through methodology in applying reinforced composite, finishes can vary. For us the key ingredient to quality work is still the same - Attention To Detail. Whether it be a commercial facility or a residential back yard. Our attention to detail is unsurpassed.

The Details:

  • Step 1. Surface preparation
  • Step 2. Cut seal lines and all fittings
  • Step 3. Pre-Coat AquaGuard 5001 Industrial Sealer®
  • Step 4. Initial base coat of AquaGuard 5000®
  • Step 5. A second coat of AquaGuard 5000®
  • Step 6. A third coat of AquaGuard 5000®

Let's talk about Prep Work

Preparation Is Most Important
The presence of ground/hydrostatic pressure can be controlled a number of ways depending on the pressure. Taking the proper steps here will eliminate the possibility of the pool heaving.
If the pool is equipped with a hydrostatic valve the valve will be removed and replaced with a 2 inch stack pipe to stabilize the water. In cases where the water is 24 inches above the pool bottom, we install an overhead well point to overcome the pressure.
As much care as possible is taken to ensure good surface preparation. Loose marcite, dirt, grease, oil, release agents and a variety of surface contaminants and residuals can be present on the existing surface. A high pressure cleaner will remove most of this. For more stubborn oil and grease, a diluted solution of tri-sodium phosphate (TSP) will be used. Smooth concrete surfaces will be etched using a diluted solution of muriatic acid, followed by a solution of sodium bicarbonate to neutralize the acid and maintain proper pH balances.
Fiberglass and steel surfaces need to be profiled. We grind or abrade the surface with coarse grain grinding discs to achieve an adequate anchor pattern, and we thoroughly inspect the surface area. Concrete swimming pool surfaces are checked for hollow spots, cracks, and any other defects. Repairs are made using fast setting cement or our own Seal Line Lock 77® Putty.
Seal Line Lock 77® Putty is a high strength water immersable chemical resistant putty. Our Seal Line Lock 77® Putty is a four component mix known for its strength and durability.
Using our own process we hand mix the putty on site, thus allowing us to adjust the ingredients to suit the different application needs. All repairs are then sanded or ground smooth so as to blend the edges.

Seal Lines are Critical
Any place the lining terminates will require a seal line. Such areas include main drains, under tile line, returns, light niches, and skimmers, just to name a few. American Pools Resurfacing pays very close attention to these seal lines. Our process, the "Cut-Back V" and our Seal Line Lock 77® Putty have through the years proven very dependable. Other less expensive putties and sealers are available, but American Pools Resurfacing understands the importance of these seal lines, we spare no expense in this process.

We Stress the Importance of Seal Lines
With the American Pools Resurfacing process, the "Cut-Back V" has a 20 year proven performance record for stopping water leakage at the seal lines, under the tile line, fittings, main drains, etc.

Using a Heavy Duty Industrial Sealer
Our AquaGuard 5000® sealer pre-coat is a two component system formulated to lock in and seal concrete, masonry mastics, and steel. Its superior water resistance and outstanding adhesion properties to rusty, wet, or damp surfaces makes it a perfect base coat for our state of the art AquaGuard 5000®.

AquaGuard 5000® Refinishing Application process
Our AquaGuard 5000® is formulated as a high-build system designed to be spray applied in a single coat or a three layered build up hand applied process. Our process begins by applying our AquaGuard 5000® primer sealer. One or two coats will be applied depending on the porosity of the surface. This locks in and reconditions the pool surface, preparing it for our layered top coats.
The entire shell is then thoroughly inspected. Now for our state of the art AquaGuard 5000®, paying particular attention to the pre-cut (Cut-Back V) seal line our initial base coat of AquaGuard 5000® is then applied achieving a minimum thickness of 20mills. We allow each coat to dry for a minimum of 6 to 8 hours depending on the ambient air temperature. Between coats we do a visual inspection and sand any runs or sags. We roll apply the finish coat to a minimal thickness of approximately 15 to 25mills, ensuring that all seal lines are thoroughly coated and sealed. Depending on material thickness, a third coat of AquaGuard 5000® may need to be applied, thus ensuring a final refinishing liner thickness of no less than 40 plus mills. This ensures a thick, smooth, continuous porous free finish rich in color and texture that is virtually impervious to chemical attack and physical wear.
